Basic Character Analysis: 7 Essential Questions
MOTIVATION: WHY do I do what I do? Motivation is what drives characters to behave the way the do. It is based on their background, and defines their dreams, desires and influences their schemes and how they treat others. Motivation should be answered as: upbringing? social class? economic class? religion? parent relationships? friends? enemies? ETC . . .
OBJECTIVE: WHAT do I want to gain/accomplish? Objective is scene specific, and can change. What is the character trying to do? What do they want out of this scene, and from the other characters.
OBSTACLES: WHO or WHAT stands in my way? Conflict shapes drama - - and so of course no one gets everything they want. What is preventing, or threatens to prevent, your character from completing their Objective? Who or what needs to be overcome or defeated in order for your character to get what they want?
STAKES: What to I have to GAIN or LOSE? Before you try to overcome your obstacles, it's best to determine if it's worth it. If you have everything to lose by going forward, and nothing to gain, why would you even try? Conversely, if you have everything to gain and nothing to lose, of course you're going to do it. In order for the character to initiate conflict with the obstacle(s) in order to gain their objective, first they have to determine if it's worth the RISK - - and with no risk, there is no drama.
STRATEGY & TACTICS: HOW do I overcome the obstacles? Strategy is the big picture, Tactics are the details.
ACTION: What do I actually do? Sun Tzu said in The Art of War that no battle plan survives first contact with the enemy. That's because the other characters - especially any "obstacles" don't necessarily want to play along - - they have their own Objectives, Strategies and Tactics.
OUTCOME: WHAT happens? Am I SUCCESSFUL, or do I FAIL? So, what actually happens in the scene?
